Family Therapy

When the whole family attends counselling sessions together as a group it is called family therapy. We view the family as a system and know that as a unit the family can help one another through difficult times. The therapist facilitates open and honest communication amongst the members of the family. This allows the family as a whole to rediscover their strengths and increase the feeling of security of the individual members. Although this may seem quite intimidating in the beginning a family can soon become comfortable and tuned in to one another after a few sessions.

Family therapy may be beneficial in the following cases:

  • Traumatic events affecting the members of the family.

  • Families in transition such as moving or new arrivals.

  • Grief or loss issues affecting the whole family.

  • To provide support and understanding when children have behaviour or emotional problems.

  • When parents are concerned about their children for whatever reason.

  • When there is a high level of conflict in a family.

  • When there is substance or alcohol abuse in a family.

  • When a member of the family suffers from depression or anxiety problems.

  • Parent counselling.
